The rambling form of this Contemporary style house sprawls across the wooded site. Contemporary style architecture is often integrated with the surrounding landforms, and this house almost disappears into the setting. This is reinforced by the dark roof, green walls and patterned grillework placed in the center of the house. The house form shows similarities to the Ranch style in the single story, low-rise gable roof, deeply overhanging eaves and the garage wing perpendicular to the main house. However, the windows incorporated into the gable roofline were a special feature of the Contemporary style. Here, a courtyard is framed by open, square-patterned masonry walls on either side of the front entrance. The double door entrance is framed in windows, another Contemporary feature. The roof plane of the wall is recessed where the door and windows are located. The house also features clerestory windows, which are a band of windows that run along the very top of the wall. The walls are covered in vertical wood siding that has the appearance of very wide boards and battens.
This home was built in 1960 for Dr. John W. Burgess, partner in the Children's Clinic and the Burgess & Burgess pediatrician practice.
