Heinz & Anita Maxeiner House, 1422 40th Avenue

Heinz (Heinrich) Maxeiner a realtor, builder and insurance broker, built this house around 1947. He would live here until he passed away in 1975. Anita Frick Maxeiner attended Western Illinois University at Macomb and earned a teaching certificate in 1930. She met Heinz Maxeiner in the 1930s. They were both outdoor enthusiasts and members of the Black Hawk Hiking Club, founded by John Hauberg. Heinz and Anita were married in 1939. They raised four children in this home. She taught at Moline schools and was an active member of Gloria Dei Presbyterian Church. She was also PTA president of Edison School, president of the Rock Island Republican Women and enjoyed travel. She passed away in 2002.

Cape Cod houses enjoyed a revival during the 1940s and 1950s, often with Minimal Traditional house forms and size. They were usually one and a half stories tall with two or three gable dormers on the front facade. Watch Hill experienced considerable post-war construction, with many homes in the Colonial Revival and Cape Cod styles. This house is considered to be the most intact Cape Cod in the entire neighborhood, and perhaps the city. It has a gable roof with three gable dormers that have eight over one double hung windows. The walls of the house are covered with wide clapboard. A front window exemplifies the integration of small window panes of historic Cape Cods with the modern "picture window." The 45 fixed panes take up nearly the entire space on that front facade wall. The glass and paneled wooden storm door is flanked by four fixed square panes on either side. Four square posts support a slight roof overhang. The stoop is poured concrete.
