The City of Rock Island allows the burning of DRY LEAVES ONLY on approved days of the year. Yard waste, such as tree limbs, grass, and twigs are not allowed to be burned. Prior to burning, dial 732-BURN (2876) for a recorded message that will advise you if leaf burning is allowed that day due to weather conditions. Follow the guidelines below when burning leaves.

• Approved burn days are: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday.
  
  
• Do not burn within 25 feet of any structure;
  
  
• Leaf burning is allowed between sunrise and sunset only. All embers must be extinguished at sunset;
  
  
• A way to extinguish the fire must be kept readily available (rakes, water hose, bucket of water);
  
  
• Leaf burning shall take place ONLY on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays;
  
  
• Leaves may be burned on private property or in the gutters of the streets adjacent to the owner’s property if the street is not constructed of asphalt or any like material, which would be damaged by the fire;
  
  
• Leaves may not be burned on sidewalks;
  
  
• The fire must be attended at all times;
  
  
• Leaf burning may be prohibited by order of the fire chief or his delegate on any day that he determines that atmospheric conditions are such that burning leaves would be dangerous to the health of the citizens of Rock Island.

The City of Rock Island encourages the use of leaf bags. The city offers 10 leaf bags per day and can be picked up at the city municipal building 1301 Mill street, city hall or the recycling center. All that is required is a picture ID or a piece of official postal mail.
