ADOPT-A-HIGHWAY PROGRAM
Adopt-A-Highway is a community involvement program that brings volunteers into partnership with Keep Rock Island Beautiful and the City of Rock Island to keep our roadsides clean. The program also educates and encourages people to stop littering. In addition, through the cleanup efforts, visitor and tourists have a better first impression of our city.
Each volunteer group is responsible for a section of highway and agrees to remove litter a minimum of four times per year for a minimum of two years. Keep Rock Island Beautiful will provide safety vests and bags for your cleanup efforts.
An organization wishing to become part of the Adopt-A-Highway Program will need to fill out an Adopt-A-Highway application. The completed application should be signed and returned to Keep Rock Island Beautiful at 201 15th Street, Rock Island, IL 61201.
Once an agreement has been signed by the applicant, it is referred to the City Council who authorizes the City Manager to sign the agreement. When the agreement has been signed by the City Manager, the Street Division of the Public Works Department is notified to begin their procedures to install the Adopt-A-Highway signs. The signs indicate the sections of street to be adopted noting the name of the organization and the length in miles adopted. At this time a representative from Keep Rock Island Beautiful will meet with the organization to review the agreement and safety rules.
Once the official “Adopt-A-Highway” signs are installed, the organization may begin to maintain the street.
Keep America Beautiful, Inc. is the nation’s largest nonprofit community improvement and educational organization, founded in 1953.
