Lock & Dam 15 Lighting Project

Dramatic Lighting & Distinctive Architecture

Completed in 1934 as a Works Progress Administration project, Lock and Dam 15 is the largest roller dam in the world and is a truly iconic feature in the Quad Cities. One of the strategies in the award-winning 2004 RiverVision Plan was to light Lock and Dam 15 in order to attract attention to its distinctive architecture and mechanical elements.

Goals of the Project

RDG Planning and Design were commissioned to look at dramatic lighting options, maintaining the safety and security of the Lock, minimizing glare and light trespass for tow captains and the viewing public, and keeping operating and maintenance expense to a minimum.

Project Update

The plan RDG developed accomplished those objectives. Financial constraints have put this project on hold until sources of construction and operating funds can be identified.

Looking Forward

Imagine the nighttime views from Schwiebert Riverfront Park of the lighted Centennial Bridge to the west and a colorful lighting display at the Lock and Dam.
