A curious mind is an active mind, and that’s good for both healthier aging and social connection. Your Rock Island Public Library offers multiple opportunities in the last few weeks of August to spark curiosity and try something new.
The River Runs Through It video documentary series offers a free way to explore the history and industry of the Mighty Mississippi in four upcoming programs. The library will show “Life on the Mississippi,” Wednesday, August 20 from 1:30 to 3:30 pm at the Downtown Library, 401 19th Street. The highly acclaimed PBS production is based on Mark Twain’s book of the same name, and covers the author’s early life as a river pilot.
Future River Runs Through It programs include The History of Steamboats on September 3; Big Trouble on the River (floods of 1927 and 1937) on September 20, and The Mississippi, River of Life, on October 15. All are at 2 pm in the Downtown Library Community Room. These events are free and open to all ages, and do not require registration.

The library will show the Labor Day episode of Drive Thru History Adventures with Dave Stotts, which leads viewers in a visual tour of sites from the Industrial Revolution and the labor movement. The free Holiday History event is at 2 pm on August 25, also at the Downtown Library,
