The Polar Express, Chris Van Allsburg’s captivating 1985 book about a magical train ride to the North Pole, turns 40 this year. To celebrate, the Rock Island Public Library is offering a free family event on Saturday, December 13.

The free Polar Express Party focuses on the magic and wonder of the book, which has remained a worldwide best seller and beloved Christmas story since its publication. The free Polar Express drop-in party for families is offered from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm on Saturday, December 13 at the Rock Island Downtown Library, 401 19th Street, Rock Island.

Families can don their conductor hats and come “on board” for holiday fun that includes cocoa, kid-friendly crafts, and a selfie picture station. Crafts include making a clear ornament, decorating a paper gingerbread shape, and painting a wooden train cutout. All children receive a free “for those who still believe” bell ornament.

The event is free, open to all, and does not require registration.

The 1985 fantasy children's picture book, written and illustrated by American author Chris Van Allsburg, earned the Caldecott Medal for illustration in 1986, and appeared on the New York Times bestseller list. By 1989, it had sold more than one million copies, and held its place on the best seller list. It was named one of the "Top 100 Picture Books" of all time in a 2012 poll by School Library Journal.
