Summer fun is just around the corner, and registration is open now for Rock Island Public Library art, math, and drawing classes for school-age children offered through the library's "Find Your Voice" summer learning programming.

Express Your Unique Voice through Art, Math, and Drawing, at Rock Island Public Library

Summer fun is just around the corner. From June 1 to July 31, the Rock Island Public Library will offer hundreds of ways to “Find Your Voice” through stories, expression, and creative activities for all ages at library locations. Parents and caregivers looking for extended programs can sign their school-age children up now for popular summer art, math, and a new “Draw Your Story” option.

Voices in Art is the theme of this year’s Summer Art program. The five-week series is for children entering 3rd through 8th grades. Led by art instructor Gloria Burlingame, each hour-long class introduces a different artist and art technique. Voices in Art is offered at 2:00 to 3:00 pm on Tuesdays, from June 6 through July 11 at the Downtown Library, 401 19th Street, Rock Island. (No class on the July 4 holiday.)

Summer Math Club immediately follows Voices in Art at the Downtown Library. From 3:15 to 4 pm each week, Ms. Elizabeth Russell will lead kids through fun, engaging math concepts that incorporate stories, games, and snacks. The series, which also runs June 6 through July 11 with a break for July 4, is for children entering 2nd through 6th grades, and offers fun ways to look at measurement, geometric shapes, skip counting, and more.

On Thursdays in June, Draw Your Story takes a look at the world of graphic novel book illustration. Graphic novels are books where the story is mostly told through pictures. The free class for ages 10 through 18 meets June 8 through June 29 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm at the Rock Island Watts-Midtown Branch. Library staff will offer a short discussion of a particular graphic novel illustrator, and then students can draw their own stories.

All three programs are free and open to all in the designated age range. Capacity is limited, and registration is required. To sign up a child for any of these programs, visit the Rock Island Public Library website. Registration is also available in person at any Rock Island Public Library location, or by calling the Children’s Room desk, 309-732-7360.

Summer Art is made possible through the Geifman Fund for Art and Drama, established through the Rock Island Public Library Foundation many years ago.

The Rock Island Public Library, Quad City Botanical Center, and numerous community partners will offer the Find Your Voice Summer Kickoff on Wednesday, May 31, from 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm at the Quad City Botanical Center, 2525 4th Avenue, Rock Island. The free event is open to all, and features summer reading registration for all ages, fun around the gardens, activities from community partners on ways to find your voice through reading, the outdoors, learning, and the arts. In the event of rain, all activities will move inside the Botanical Center.
