Non-Fiction Fans – There’s a Summer Book Club for You, Starting June 28!  Whether you’re already a fan of non-fiction, or want to expand your reading horizons a bit, the Rock Island Public Library’s summer only non-fiction book club can help you develop that interest.

The Summer Non-Fiction Book Club kicks off Wednesday, June 28 at 5 pm in Longview Park, Rock Island, with a discussion of “Think Again, The Power of Knowing What You Don’t Know, by Adam Grant. Grant, an organizational psychologist, is one of Wharton Business School’s top ranked professors, and the author of Originals and Give and Take.  According to the publisher, “With bold ideas and rigorous evidence, he investigates how we can embrace the joy of being wrong, bring nuance to charged conversations, and build schools, workplaces, and communities of lifelong learners.”

On Wednesday, July 26, the club discusses a memoir by the youngest winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, “I Am Malala, The Girl Who Stood Up to For Education and Was Shot by the Taliban,” by Malala Yousafzai and Christina Lamb. “I Am Malala is the remarkable tale of a family uprooted by global terrorism, of the fight for girls' education, of a father who, himself a school owner, championed and encouraged his daughter to write and attend school, and of brave parents who have a fierce love for their daughter in a society that prizes sons.” (Publisher’s description.)

The final club discussion, on Wednesday, August 30, is on “The Ghost Map: The Story of London's Most Terrifying Epidemic—and How It Changed Science, Cities, and the Modern World” by Steven Johnson. From the publisher: Cultural historian uncovers the history of murderous cholera infestations in London and the scientific research that revealed the microbial origins of the outbreaks. In a triumph of multidisciplinary thinking, Johnson illuminates the intertwined histories of the spread of disease, the rise of cities, and the nature of scientific inquiry, offering both a riveting history and a powerful explanation of how it has shaped the world we live in.”

All discussions start at 5:00 pm in Longview Park, 1300 17^th St., Rock Island. Participants should bring a chair or blanket. In the event of rain, discussions will move to the Rock Island Public Library Watts-Midtown Branch, 2715 30^th Street, Rock Island.
