School Break? Explore the Library with Games, STEAM, and Space Events: If you’re looking for fun and free family activities to do together while Rock Island/Milan Schools are on break for fall intersession, look to your library!

On Wednesday, September 27, the Rock Island Public Library offers Family Game Day, from 3:30 to 5:30pm at the Rock Island Downtown Library, 401 19th Street. With no school Thursday at RIMSD #41 elementary schools due to parent-teacher conferences, it’s the perfect time to try out the library’s new games! The library will have a wide selection of its oversized yard games, family board games and STEM games available for playing in the Community Room, and offer preschool games and activities in the Children’s Room.

Fall intersession for Rock Island/Milan Schools is Monday, October 2 to Friday, October 13. During the two-week break, the library will offer the following drop-in activities in the Downtown Library Children’s Room:

From Oct. 2 to 7, the library offers FrankenSTEAM week, with special monster-themed STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) stations in the children’s room. Build a monster, learn about electric circuits, check out monster books, and more. Oct. 9 to 14 is Rocket into Reading Week, with a wide variety of space learning stations available for exploring, play, and learning.  Both of these themed-week activities are free and open to families, and are available for drop-in exploration and fun during regular Downtown Library hours – 10 am to 6 pm Monday -Friday, and 10 am to 2pm Saturdays.

For other ways to enjoy family time during the two-week school break with your library card, check out a 7-day culture pass to local museums and attractions, or browse the library’s wide selection of books, music, movies, and games. The library also offers a wide variety of yard games, craft tools, baking equipment, and sports items for check out through its Library of Things collection.

RIPL cardholders planning an Illinois family trip during break may also want to search for statewide passes and discounts available through the library’s membership in Explore More Illinois. To see what’s available, visit Digital Resources or the Culture Pass pages at the library website.
