Whether you’re caught up with all the Christmas festivities or not, free library events can be a nice break from all the holiday hustle and bustle. The Rock Island Public Library offers a number of events this week before breaking for the holidays.
Silent Book Club, on Wednesday, December 17, offered at 5:30 pm at the Rock Island Watts-Midtown Branch, 2715 30th Street. Unlike a traditional book club, where members all read the same thing and discuss it publicly, participants in a Silent Book Club bring their own book and read silently in a group. The event suits those who want to set aside time for reading, may not be comfortable speaking in public, or who simply prefer to choose their own reading material.
Get out of the house for a free movie with Downtown Movie Club, Thursday, December 18, at 1:00 pm from 3:30 pm, at the Rock Island Downtown Library, 401 19th Street. This month's selection shows the final chapter of one of England's most beloved families and their cherished estate. Light refreshments provided.
On Friday, it’s Late Night at the Watts-Midtown Branch, as the auditorium serves as the site of an outside event, the Bucktown Music Review. As well as serving as the site of this ticketed event, the Watts-Midtown Branch is open for library business until 9 pm. Teens can also stop by between 7 and 9 pm for “Teens After Hours,” which offers free pizza and retro gaming in the Teen corner for ages 12 to 17.
For those who are having a hard time emotionally during the holidays, Saturday’s “Living with Loss, Grief Reflections” group can be helpful. The free discussion group meets from 11 am to 1 pm on Saturday, December 20 at the Watts-Midtown Branch, 2715 30th Street.
The Rock Island Public Library will be closed Wednesday, December 24 and Thursday, December 25 for the Christmas holidays, and again on Wednesday, December 31 and Thursday, January 1, for the New Years Day holiday. All Rock Island Library locations reopen for normal hours on December 26 and January 2.
