Become Involved with Review Environmental Review
Just as natural resources are considered in publicly funded or licensed projects, historical resources are considered as well.
Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 provided for the review and possible protection of historical resources if federal projects have the potential for impact. In 1987, the State of Illinois put in place legislation (Illinois Historic Preservation Act) providing for similar review and protections if state projects impact historical resources.
The Rock Island Preservation Commission can become involved with environmental review in two ways:
- City staff and the Commission may have responsibility for performing the actual review; or
- The Commission may become involved as a consulting party when another agency performs the review. The comments of the Preservation Commission are given considerable weight when final project details are mitigated.
